I see a consistency in the tragedies of Shakespeare. All of the villains or main characters seem to go insane over visions they have. Hamlet sees his dads ghost, Othello believes what Iago says without any proof (minus the handkerchief), and Macbeth believes what some witches tell him, (What was with those witches anyways?)
I love macbeth. It is my favorite of SHakespeare's tragedies so i enjoyed it very much. I also loved how they filmed the scene where Lady Macbeth goes insane and can't wash the blood from her hands. I think everyone did a really good job acting as well.
I liked this movie more than I anticipated. I think Roman did a great job directing because he made the story more significant by incorporating symoblism and bold visuals. However, it was really violent maybe more so than it needed to be. Overall, I enjoyed the movie.
The movie was captivating!! Definitely more than I expected. I agree with everything said above, the imagery and symbolism and the INTENSITY! It was absolutley wonderful!
I have always thought that Roman Polansky was a great director. And this movie was no different. It was exciting, intense, and captivating to me. At first I didn't understand the play when I was reading it in the book, but after I saw this movie, the reading was more clear to me than it was when I read it. Every movie director has done something different with the shakespeare play that they were given to direct, and Roman Polansky did a great job with Macbeth. I have only seen one of his movies that he had directed before this one and I thought that that movie was wonderfully directed and then after seeing this movie I also thought that it was wonderfully directed just as much as the other one.
I loved how Polanski never hesitates to show some gore to give the film a more violent edge. The cinematography made the film a visually pleasing with images of landscapes.
I really enjoyed this MacBeth film. I felt that the characters really interacted well with eachother to show the true meaing of this play. The director did an excellant job of portraying this captivating play. Well done.
This film was a great film that kept my interest throughout its duration. I believe that Polanski did a great job transitioning the play into film. For example, the idea of the witches could have been very unbelievable and farfetched, however Polansky pulled it off with ease. The overall eeriness of the play was also very well done and portrayed the overall theme of a Shakespeare tragedy perfectly.
This movie was really interesting. I think that it is one of the better Shakespeare's tragedies becasue it is not too gorey or depressing. It is strange because the Lady Macbeth goes insane yet Macbeth himself also becomes insane but in two completly different ways. Lady Macbeth becomes dillusional and Mabeth wants to kill anyone who could interfere with his claim to the throne.
In Macbeth we again see the story of someone going insane. I liked the way in which the director portrayed the steps to his insanity, first showing him upset with it after his first murders then fully grasping the concept of simply killing everyone is his path. I agree with the above statement of how Lady Macbeth could not seem to wash the blood from her hands, making symbolism very apparent.
Polanski did a great job of directing this film and relating it to his personal issues. It's crazy to think that he is connected to the Manson murders. I enjoyed this tragedy because it wasn't extremely gory but was still able to express the hatred.
Macbeth is also like other Shakespeare plays, in that it deals with insanity and murder to get to the top. I remember reading this play in high school and I really enjoyed it. We also watched a different version of the movie. Watching it this week made me realize that it was better than I remember.
This is by far one of shakespeares best plays. The play deals Macbeth going insane and his struggles to stay in power. I thought it was very interesting how Polanski used the witches to forshadow Macbeth's rise to power with would eventually lead to his demise.
Skennedy12 is right, Lady Macbeth is an intricate character, and the real marvel in it is how much of her role is up to the director's interpretation. I have seen a number of plays in which she is cast either younger or older than the actor playing Macbeth and that changes her character dramatically. On one side you have Macbeth trying to impress a younger woman and on the other you have him being controlled by an older woman.
The characters in Macbeth did a very good job in the varying roles. Despite the fact that it was a very violent and gory film, you still were able to see the personalities of each character. Some films that are centered around violence tend to take away from the actual storyline and plot, but Macbeth does a fine job of mixing the two. My favorite character had to be Lady Macbeth. She initially seemed to be the one encouraging Macbeth and giving him orders, but in the end, was the one who really could not keep it together. The symbolism of the blood on her hands is still used today when people commit crimes or violate moral codes. I also liked the way Shakespeare built upon Macbeth’s character throughout the film. He initially comes of as someone you may enjoy, and ends up as someone you hate or despise.
Roman Planski did a generally good job at portraying macbeth as a film. I understand that the movie was made in the 1970's so it was kinda bad quality and some scenes were poorly made. But nonetheless it was an alright movie. I also thought the most interesting and entertaining scene was when Macbeth was freaking out when she was trying to get the blood off of her hand. Overall it had good acting and was enjoyable to watch.
I found this movie very interesting and a extremely similar to how Shakespeare wrote the play. Macbeth was violent and filled with a lot of insane people, like most of his plays. I have seen other versions of Macbeth and this one is by far my favorite.
great movie! the director did an awesome job with the anticipation. i also liked how violent it was. this film reminds me most of a modern day film you would see in the theaters today.
I really enjoyed watching the movie version. Macbeth is one of Shakespeare's plays that I have read several times for many of my other classes. I thought that the film version did a great job portraying some of the scenes that may have been a little hard to understand in the reading. You also notice the violence a lot more it the film because it is viewed infront of you. It really makes his plays more intense.
In my opinion Polanski achieves some of the most accurate and realistic depictions of how Macbeth is written, than the majority of the films we have watched. I felt the audience was really drawn into the action through living the story the way Macbeth would have, i.e. in a castle, with the mud, and the specifically the witches impressed me a lot.
Most modern directors adapting William Shakespeare's plays for today's cinema audience skip or drastically alter vast portions of text in order to make the story more accessible. However, Roman Polanski's 1971 version of Macbeth clarifies and emphasizes certain aspects of the story while rarely resorting to such wholesale word chopping.
I feel that Roman Polansky took the production of Shakespeare plays to another level. He was not afraid to add drastic visual aids to emphasize scenes from the play. It made this movie memorable and entertaining to watch.
Nice adaptation of Shakespeares play. Obviously any director has to make changes to the original text for the transfer to the screen, but I thought Polanski handled it well. Knowing what Polanski was going through at the time, you really notice his touch on the film, especially with the themes of insanity and violence.
Macbeth is my favorite Shakespeare play. The film was really good but it cannot beat the theater. I thought Lady Macbeth should have become more sporadically insane instead of how she almost seemed to be sleep-walking. I also think that Macbeth should have become more savage at the end. He should have acted angrier at the world and should have killed more people. That is just a personal preference though. However nobody can dispute the baldy choreographed fighting scene. It looked like a bunch of sillynannys who did not know what to do with a sword. Besides, overall I really enjoyed the movie; especially, when the gatekeeper was acting super belligerent drunk.
This was another film which was more ejoyable to me. The film was brutal and gory and Macbeth did anything he could to attain power. That reminded of Richard III. I thought this film was done very well and the actors did a great job.
It was an intense approach to Shakespeare which I loved! I love how you can bring out human emotion so much more in film compared to plays. I wonder how theatre actors approached Lady Macbeth. I would think that this up close portrayal would be a lot more difficult to nail, but it turned out great. Powerful stuff.
Wow I love this movie! Macbeth is my favorite of all Shakespeare’s works. From the beginning of the movie you know that it is going to be a blood bath when you see the warrior beat his enemy to a bloody mess. Lady Macbeth's scene where she tries to wash the blood off of her hands is great I think she is my favorite in the movie. I love that Macbeth will go to any lengths to get power it's a great example of Nietzche's theory on the will to power. The movie is bloody and everyone is crazy its very powerful and I think Polanski did a great job in his portrayal.
Macbeth is such a classic, this movie is so dark with the lengths Macbth and his wife will go for ultimate power of the crown. i think it serves his wife right that she ends up going crazy, while suicide wouldnt be my first choice for her, it just makes the plot that much deeper. Shakespeare knows how to write some of the most tragic plays i have ever read, macbeth wins the award for "most tragic"
I really enjoyed Macbeth, and although i expected there to be more blood and gore i enjoyed the fact that the film became more grosome in deluted minds instead of bodies as the movie went on. My favorite thing about the movie is when Macbeths poor bride is somewhat of a greed in the role as the Kings wife and she justifies the actions of the Kings murder by saying, "whats done is done". But you surely and quickly see that as she loses her mind in the mess they had created of back stabbing and murder she speaks to her self and says soon before her suicide out the window "what's done cannot be undone". BRILLIANT!
Macbeth is easily one of my favorite Shakespeare's tragedies and Polanski does a wonderful job at capturing everything that makes this story so great, onto a screen. I love Macbeth in this movie, the actress plays her with such passion and power. As you watch it you can feel the struggle and passion that each character gives. Overall this movie was very enjoyable to watch and follow.
I was Actually in the Macbeth play back in high school. The movie portayed it much different from how we presented it. It was fun to see may character, the third witch. I thought the movie was very entertaining and well put together.
What i loved about this movie is that although Macbeth is the evil character he didn't start out that way. The true Machiavellian character was his wife. She manipulated him with tears when he changed his mind about killing his kin and house guest, the king. And then when he started to regret the killing of his king she basically told him to stop and went to finish the business. also when he started to go crazy from guilt she basically told him to suck it up. I really enjoyed the movie and the differences it had from your average run of the mill Shakespeare tragedy.
The director once again did great on this film. Not only did he make one of the greatest Shakespeare re-makes ever but he used action and passion to give this film the final push it needed.
I really enjoyed this movie because I love to see a woman who is a strong villain. She manipulated her husband to get what she wanted. "The deceiver will always find someone ready to be deceived."
This version of Macbeth was very gory and violent in some scenes. Macbeth and Macduff anger toward one another was seen in the last fight scene ending with Macbeth's head cut off. You could real feel the anger towards one another and how much they truly hated each other. To say the least, Macduff seeked his revenge.
I totally agree with Craig Musich that were some horrifying and violent scenes! Within this play and movie you can see the obvious resemblance of Seneca. You see revenge and madness! I thought the spookiest scene was when the ghost of Banquo came to haunt Macbeth! I thought the movie was really good and well done, and ended with an epic defeat of Macbeth being deheaded!
I thought this movie was good but kinda painful to watch. It was so easy to see how things were going to go wrong. I esspecially like the scene when Macbeth comes back from going to see the witches and finds his lords saying bad things about him and his wife slowly lossing it. The actor portrayed well how the character must have felt the house of cards he had erected crumbing around him.
I really enjoyed the Macbeth film. Polanski did a great job with the film. I thought the actors did a great job throughout the film. It was one of my favorite films we have watched in class so far. Shakespeare's tragedies are so intense and it was a little brutal at times but a very interesting film to view.
I had seem this movie back in highschool, but it had been some time. I really like the story of macbeth, and I think they did a good job in this movie. It really shows how far people will go to have power. A very revenge filled plot.
I enjoyed the storyline in Macbeth. i found it interesting that in the end power was the death of him. All that he worked so hard for was given up by his guilty concious and power was the victor.
I really liked Macbeth. I found that the corruption and power theme to be very interesting and prevalent in todays society. People are willing to do anything to have ultimate power.
I did not like Macbeth very much. But I do agree with what most people said about the corrupted theme being interesting. I personally thought that the most interesting parts of the play/film were when someone who had shed blood felt guilt and let their concsious take over their actions and brain. When Lady Macbeth tries "to wash her sin" to wash of the blood from the murders on her hands and cant. Well because there is no blood but she feels the guilt and remorse, finally. Also when Macbeth sees his old friend who he killed at dinner. And he makes a big scene because he finally feels remorse. Shakespeare proves that the powerful are crazy. Corrupt people lead themselves to their own fate, ultimately death.
I really enjoyed this film. Macbeth has an intriguing story. To me it doesn't strike me as a Shakespeare play. I don't know much about Shakespeare, but it seems like a Greek play. Lady Macbeth in the film was probably my least favorite of the characters. She seemed very whiney and needy to me.
I really enjoyed this film. To me it brought up an interesting philosophical question. The self-fulfilling prophecy. That is if Macbeth did not hear the prophecy would he have murdered the king? Would he become king? I really liked the scene where they were washing the blood of the hands. This foreshadows all the darkness to come later in the play.
Macbeth really exposes the dark potential a Roman Polanski can bring to a shakespeare play. The dark setting mixed with the muddy and rainy visual effects. Just as the play the movie Macbeth spares no disregard for loss of human life. Characters are being hung, having their heads cut off, and even jumping out of castle windows. I believe Polanski articulated Macbeth quite well on screen.
I think it is interesting how the play opens in the middle of a lightning and thunder storm with three witches present. I feel like this is an ominous start for and ominous play. This could be considered foreshadowing that the play is full of murders and deceitful actions. These witches are the ones who put this crazy idea of becoming king in Macbeth’s head. Without them Macbeth would never have had the ambition to become king.
Im definitely in Shakespeare's tragedy's, there is generally on character go striving to be king, or have some piece of the throne, and once they achieve that goal it really doesn't seem to be enough. They usually have murdered someone and begin having guilt and resenting themselves, going crazy and a majority of the people die.
I enjoyed watching this film. It kept my attention throughout the whole thing. Shakespeare seems to have a common theme for the hunger for power. I have found that there is always one character who wants power and will do anything to get it. But those traits seem to keep the films and plays interesting.
I find the story-line of this film/play so interesting. I especially liked watching The Throne of Blood, becuase it was such a great interpretation of Shakespeare's idea. I do agree with what LEO said about Lady MacBeth being the most annoying character. However, if you viewed Throne of Blood, Lady Washizu, a parallel of Lady Macbeth, was eerily wicked. The way both women were willing and able to manipulate their husbands for the sake of power was intense. I think both these interpretations of Macbeth were well-done.
I really enjoyed this film on MacBeth. It is one of my favorite Shakespeare tragedy's and the murder scenes are portrayed very well in this film. I like both of the interpretations of Macbeth but i like this version a little more because the violence is more intense and allows you to get into the movie.
I believe that both interpretations of Macbeth were very well done, Polanski's and Throne Of Blood. I agree with LMW that Lady Washizu was wicked. But I really enjoyed Lady Macbeth, the actress at least. She portrayed her very well.
I agree with ElleMichelle and I really loved the actress's portrayal of Lady Macbeth. Unfortunately, that was almost the only thing I liked about the movie. I followed the story well enough and the story itself is obviously good, but I had a hard time staying awake during the film. Once people started dying my attention was hooked, but a while I was not remotely captivated.
I really enjoyed watching this version of Macbeth, good to see Polanski isn't afraid to really show the violent themes on film, really enjoyed his version of a classic play.
I really like this version of Macbeth and I thought that it was depicted very well and also Lady Macbeth was played very well into this movie. I really enjoyed her character.
This version of Macbeth is very interesting to me. I really like how it goes a long with the play for the most part and has a lot of the "famous" scenes from the Macbeth play.
Lady Macbeth is a sociopath. She is almost driven to tears when Macbeth hesitates to stab Duncan to death. She has absolutely no moral compass and although Macbeth is ultimately the one who commits the murder, Lady Macbeth is the one behind the wheel. Macbeth is like her own life size marionette that she can manipulate to do whatever she says. The scene where she is dreaming and cannot wash the blood from her hands shows her delayed guilt that she feels for orchestrating this mess in which Macbeth finds himself. The actress who played Lady Mabeth did a really good job throughout the movie, but especially in that scene
I really enjoyed this version of the play by polanski. I thought it portrayed the theme of revenge and greed very well. Also, Lady macbeth was good but I think in the Throne of Blood she was played to more of what shakespeare was trying to represent.
MacBeth was very interesting. I liked it a lot. It was very interesting to see how Lady MacBeth thought that she was not having issues with the killing, but in reality she was subconsciously. Macbeth though was very evil which is understandable, but he was very stupid. He relied to much in the prophecies.
I wanted to add to what I said before because I saw some people such as LMW, Nick and Zguild comparing the throne of blood to Macbeth. After watching Throne of Blood I still hands down think Roman Polansk's film was more terrifying and tragic. The thing that bothered me with the Throne of Blood was you didn't get to see Macbeth murder the king. I felt that was a necessary part to show because you can start to feel the guilt building up inside Macbeth as well as Lady Macbeth. Also, you almost feel like you too are walking on egg shells by just watching it. I was disappointed with how the Throne of blood portrayed that.
I enjoyed this movie very much, one of Shakespeare's better works just because of the diversity that it entails. Macbeth was not the sharpest tool in the shed but his passionate evil side made his character believable. It makes sense that he would be evil but the end does not justify the means.
I've always liked the play Macbeth and found it interesting. In highschool we spent a lot of time studying the play and watching the film. Personally the previous Macbeth film I watched a few years ago was not impressing me much, but it still had my attention. We had to perform a scene in Macbeth for a project in high school and my group got the end scene when he is fighting and dies. I was Macbeth so I had to really study his lines and understand where he was coming from. Doing that project gave me a new understanding for the play so I was looking forward to seeing Polanskis version. Polanskis version surprised me a lot. I was dissapointed with the previous Macbeth film I had seen so I was not expecting more but I was impressed. I liked how everything was more violent and showed more and I also give props to the actress that played Lady Macbeth, she did an amazing job.
Polanski’s film adaptation of Macbeth was very entertaining. Polanski followed Shakespeare’s script precisely. Even though the film seemed low budget, the messages came through as well as the important scenes. The famous scene of the floating dagger was an important moment for Macbeth in the film and Polanski pulled that scene off very well. We could feel the emotion Macbeth was feeling as well as the intensity of what he was going to do next. Another important scene that Polanski seemed to capture well was when Macbeth went to go visit the witches again. The scenes with all of the mirrors were incredibly interesting and I believe that was the turning point in Macbeth’s life when he knew it was all going to go downhill from here. Throughout the whole film, the weather seemed foggy and misty. This provided a certain feel to the film and story that I felt was quite necessary. I really enjoyed the scene of Macbeth dreaming that Banquo killed him in his sleep. Polanski did a great job of portraying when Lady Macbeth turned crazy. We could see it gradually throughout the film and her death was inevitable. Polanski used a lot of music with the important turning point scenes in Macbeth and that added a lot of intensit
I enjoyed watching the characters in the film go crazy. It was a bloody film but interesting and entertaining to watch. I thought the movie was well directed and was very similar to the written play by Shakespeare.
Haratyk said... This year is the first year I have ever experienced Roman Polansky’s work and I am starting to see why so many people think he is a great director. This Macbeth was captivating, thrilling, and intense. It was confusing at first and reading the play did not clarify things for me very well but after watching the film everything came together, and the reading “bad guys” or villains seems to drive themselves mad or insane, in Macbeths case he starts to see witches that tell him what is going to happen and what to do.
I think that Lady Macbeth did a great job acting crazy. I think they did a good job with the actors costumes. I really liked the scenes with the witches. This was a really good movie. It was interesting watching this play and the compared to the Japanese version.
Macbeth does move a little slow, but I appreciated this version of it so much more after watching "Throne of Blood" which moved much slower and gave the viewer plenty of time to lose interest and daydream.
The story that was being interpreted in the many many different ways with "Throne of Blood" and the movie that we watched in class. The story in "Throne of Blood" seemed to be more comical with the fortune teller looking all crazy, and the how the lady Macbeth went crazy. yet it was a good story and it was a good take on the Macbeth story.
Sarah C i thought the movie was very interesting and a lot more complex then what was suggested. Each character has something about them that is discovered further into the movie.
I thought this movie was interesting. My favorite part was with the three witches, I thought they were interesting to watch. I especially liked comparing this movie to Throne of Blood, the japanese version. There so many similarities and differences. I thought I wouldn't be able to follow along well because of the subtitles, but watching Macbeth first helped a lot!
Despite what I think about Roman Polanski these days with all the legal hooplah, but I think he did a good job with this movie (I have actually seen it twice before) based on this movie alone since I don't believe I have ever seen any other of Polanski's movies.
Macbeth is a play i love. This play it very interesting to me and it very intense to watch. The play of Macbeth makes me want to watch more and has action to make the movie good. I liked this movie compared to other shakespeare plays we had to watch in class. I loved how Throne of Blood was a Japense version of Macbeth because it let me relate them to eachother. Both plays were good and i would love to see Macbeth again especially.
I really like this version of Macbeth. It was very well done for when it was made. There were some unnecessary scenes of nudity in the film, but other than that it was good.
Since I have never seen or read Macbeth before this class, the movie kept me very entertained because I had no idea what was going to happen. The end was my favorite part even though it was really violent and gory. The "witches" added an interesting and somewhat comical touch to the movie as well.
To be honest, I enjoyed this particular version of Macbeth, but possibly for the wrong reasons. Although I enjoyed "Throne of Blood", at times the film was a bit disappointing. I think the reason I enjoyed Macbeth was because it was full of much more excitement than "Throne of Blood". I was very pleased with the intensity and violence that the movie portrayed.
Having never read Macbeth or seen any movies on it, I thought this film was very well done, and I enjoyed watching it. It was intriguing to me to pay attention to all the characters and their actions, and the way the film was directed really made me feel connected to the characters and their emotions. I liked how there was always something going on in the movie, and there were rarely moments in this film that I was uninterested.
Having read Macbeth, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. i loved that i could compare the play and the movie and give a face to the characters. However, if you had not read the play i think that the plot would have a been a little difficult to follow
i enjoyed this film, and i do agree that the plot would have been a bit difficult to follow had I not read the play, however I felt that I had very different ideas of what the characters should look like. I pictured Lady Macbeth as somewhat hard woman with a streak of evil that was very present throughout the film. It was really difficult for me to picture Francesca Annis, who was very young, beautiful, and golden, as an evil wife. To me, she just did not fit the part.
I enjoyed Macbeth. I like that Lady Macbeth is the instigator because it seems that in most cases they make the male figures the vengeful and violent ones. I also enojoyed Throne of Blood because the drama was more humorous. The bird noises were ridiculously fake, each time sounding exactly the same, and in moments of silence which should've been intense all we could hear were Lady Macbeth's shoes squeaking. I think these moments made it easier to sit through and pay attention.
Reading the play definitely helped me understand and enjoy this movie. I thought that Polanski did a good job with Lady Macbeth, and it was interesting that she was portrayd as less uptight than she is in other versions of Macbeth.
Some neat things I saw through the film that caught my attention of liking was that how each scene led to one another very fluidly and that there was always some kind of action either violently or just by the overall sense of power that was to be obtained by anyway necessary. the film focused on corresponding both adult’s and teens as the directer brought violent and gore to the scene as well as he demonstrated quality acting and a good sense of feel of Elizabethan Era.
The play was intense from beginning to end. Insanity is sure to take a huge role in the play. The scenes seemed to go through quite well, It made sense for first time watchers, definitely for me.
Very powerful film. Polanski did a great job with this because he could pull from his own experiences. these horrible tragedies, he's actually experienced them. the film was just very powerful in that respect. it was well done
I enjoyed Macbeth as a play a lot and liked the movie more than i thought i would. I liked the artistic angles the director used. Also i thought it was a great performance by Lady Macbeth
I thought this movie was great, it is a story about the struggle for power, which is one of the most sown upon thing in today society. It shows that almost everyones no matter how much power they have they will always be looking for more. Just like in todays society, no matter how rich someone is they will always be trying to gain more. I think the acting was also great, each character had a unique thing to add to the movie that spiced thing up a bit.
Polanski did a wonderful job bringing this tragedy to the big screen. This is one of my favorite Shakespearean tragedies. This film was very violent, but I think it is justified in it's intensity because of the immense violence in the original story.
Macbeth is my favorite tragedy by Shakespeare by far. My favorite part in the movie was when lady macbeth was going crazy because she shouldn't get the blood off her hands. I thought the actress did a really good job playing that scene.
This is, in my opinion, Shakespeare's best tragedy. The violence in this film was intense, but it really portayed the intensity of this time period and the story at hand. Lady McBeth did a wonderful job with this role because she went along well with the violent nature of this movie
Macbeth was an all around good film. Out of all of the tragedies we have seen i feel like this one was my favorite. it was a very emotional play that was really powerful. the actors did a great job portraying the characters. it was a violent film that captured many of the realities of real life.
Macbeth is one popular shakespeare play. It is one of his most tragic plays and the film was just that. Overall Im glad I got to actually find out the story ive hear about for so many years.
I always pictured the Lord and Lady Macbeth as older and more cynical. It seemed to me that they started off fairly innocent, and then when Macbeth is told that he will be King, that all changes. I was amazed at how Lady Macbeth could scheme and plot with her husband about the murder of King Duncan, and then dance with her intended victim not five minutes later! Great film! :)
I thought this version was wonderful because to me Macbeth is all about the violence and fight scenes which were portrayed wonderfully in this film. Blood symbolizes more than just violence in this play is symbolizes guilt as well and this movie does not lose that aspect.
I liked how the characters did not speak to the camera, how it was their thoughts in their heads that were said out loud to fill in the audience of their thoughts. In past Shakespeare films, the characters have spoke to the camera and i did not like it. I think the idea of thoughts out loud was better. The changing of roles was interesting as well. Originally, Macbeths wife is the strong one that is helping him cope with the distress of the kings murder. However, as time goes on she goes crazy, eventually driving her to suicide and Macbeth becomes content with the fact that he is a murderer. The change in roles in significant.
I enjoyed Macbeth a lot, it had a lot of interesting characters and I didnt really figure what characters where what till about quarter way through the movie. But once I figured it out and was able to follow the plot I think that it was a great movie that showed the greediness of the king. I think it was a good thing that he died in the end. I liked the they out his head on a stick and ran around with it, it represented a victory for the good guys.
I really enjoyed how powerful the performance in this film of Macbeth was! I felt as though the movie really moved me, and made me feel as though these types of stories still play out in todays world, although in a much more settled way. This film really showed the typical story of a king ruling over his land, and how he himself overcame so many battles by fighting for what he believed in. Macbeth is such a classic Shakespeare film, and I am glad we got to view it!
I liked the raw feeling of this film. There was such an obvious, tense inner struggle with so many of the characters, and the actors did a beautiful job portraying that. I liked the use of the stormy weather to make the film feel darker and more grim. I honestly did not know what to think when I heard it was a playboy production, but I was pleasantly surprised.
I enjoyed the emotion and conflict that Polanski was able to convey throughout the film. You could genuinely sense the internal conflict in the Macbeth as he is carrying out his plan. Polanski's use of the setting to determine the mood, such as the weather as stated above, really helped me understand where the mood of the film was at overall.
I really enjoyed Macbeth and thought it was one of Shakespeare's better plays. I had never read or watched Macbeth before taking this class and I was taken aback at the amount of violence and gore, but the symbolism was brilliant. Overall, I think that Macbeth was one of Shakespeare's best tragedies and it was helped by the terrific acting in particular. -Jordan Williams
macbeth was my favorite film thus far. I felt that this story proves that shakespeare likes to teach through his writing that what goes around comes around. also I was very disturbed when all the weird sisters were nude. -slightlystoopid
Roman Polanski did a great job. Great acting and scenery. Gore and nudity are absolutely necessary to get into the medieval feel of the movie. At some parts the limits of cinema are evident, when transcribing literary masterpieces. Only a theatrical play can bind the actor and the audience.
Macbeth was a great tragic movie a lot of nude parts in the film. I agree that this was Shakespeare best tragic play and the dagger that Macbeth sees just before he kills Duncan in Act 2.
I found this film to be very unique, as well as the play, in their choice of character. The three witch/weird ladies are so strange and sort of creepy in a way, but at the same time they throw an interesting twist to the whole film. This film is a perfect example of the effects of having power does to people back then and even now a days. In the beginning Macbeth was a good and loving guy, but as he got all of his power he began to kill and then became evil, even disloving his wife. He had a total character change that was so obvious because most people that gain that much power definitely become something that they are not. This film was definitely a good one.
Macbeth is a very exciting and appealing story to me, i believe it is William Skakespeare's best dramatic production. It involves corruption, fantasy, and the internal battle Macbeth had with her guilty conscience. The use of violence is very vivid and passionate in this story and i feel the film shows how great of writer Shakespeare really was and how much depth his stories had.
This was a very dark and terrifying rendition of the play. I feel that Polanski managed to really create the gloomy atmosphere and frightening feel of feudal era life. I also feel that this film made use of an excellent accompanying score performed by the Third Ear Band. The groups use of atonal and droning sounds really enhances the films tone.
This is by far my favorite Shakespearian tragedy. I thought it was really interesting the way the director film the scene with Lady Macbeth not being able to scrub her blood stained hands. By far my favorite film we have watched so far.

I accidentally posted the one above without putting my name in*.
Having never read up on macbeth or never seeing it before i did not know what to expect.I liked how the witches gave it almost a magical effect to the movie right away. Lady Macbeth was perfect for this role. There was never a dull moment in this play so it wasn't as hard to concentrate on this film compared to other Shakespeare movies.
This play is one of my favorite tragedy plays by Shakespeare. It is filled with dark and twisted characters such as lady macbeth which is all captured on film and gives you the full experience of the play
I thought that it was interesting how Lady Macbeth manipulated/convinced Macbeth to kill to get to his rightful power. I also thought that this was ironic that all the killing is what drove Lady Macbeth mad. When she is trying to scrub the blood off her hands when there is no blood there really proves how crazy she has become!
This was a great film. Roman Polanski did a greatjob making the medieval settings, and Lady Macbeth was a great performance. I was surprised at how violent the movie was but felt it was necessary for it to be as gory as it was.
I really enjoyed watching this film. I felt that Roman did a great job at directing this film because he made the story line more interesting because he used symbolism and bold visual aids. I also thought this movie was a bit too violent but nonetheless I really enjoyed this.
Roman Polanski's version of Macbeth was very straight forward interpretation of the original play. I love how Polanski casted Lady Macbeth. She was very strong willed and independent, just like I think the real Lady Macbeth should be played. All the other bloggers really seemed to agree. This was by far my favorite version of Macbeth so far on screen.
I love how Shakespeare can create a perfect flawed figure. The characters he creates are extreme exaple of each spectrum of a persons emotions. He makes even the purist character contimplate its actions and slowing driving them into madeness and paranoia like Macbeth and lady macbeth
I enjoyed how Shakespeare used dreams to show the amount of guilt people were feeling. One major disagreement is how dumb the walking forest looked at the end, there were hardly any trees and it just didnt look like i would have thought. The walking forest in the movie Throne of Blood was EPIC. They really made it look like the trees were walking. Tuche.
This is on the Throne of Blood adaption was I have to say was my most favorite of the movies that we watched in class. The acting was great and casted well even though it was subtitle. Im a big fan of kurasawa and I believe this and his seven samurai movies the best movies ever made. Throne of blood was revolutionary and viusaly stunning for the time it was made.
I didn't like watching this movie. I've read the book, and I like the plot. But this movie moved extremely slowly. I thought the acting was terrible and it was not fun to watch!
I liked this movie a lot. The way Roman Polanski portrayed the film was very good and I really like the symbolism involved in the movie. One thing I was surprised about was the amount of violence but I guess it had to be like that, so I still liked it a lot overall
I actually enjoyed reading this play more then I enjoyed the movie. Don't get me wrong I think that Roman Polanski did a good job but It just moved to slow. I agree with ericaburks on that the bad acting really took away from what this movie is all about. Although Lady Macbeth was excellent in this movie.
To me this movie was pretty good, and i really enjoyed the plot of the film. I liked how as Macbeth killed more and more people he in fact became more and more guilty of his wrongdoings and this in the end ruined him. His search for power and advancement was found by committing evil deeds which was obviously the wrong way for him to go about it. I really thought that the film however could have been mad a little better, but it was alright overall.
I agree with michael that shakespeare does a good job creating villans. I also think he does a good job of depicting how being evil and power hungry makes people go crazy. Ex. Macbeth and richard III
I enjoyed Shakespeares film of macbeth, but to be honest i enjoyed the reading of Macbeth more. I enjoy the way Shakespeare makes the villain become such a big factor in the movie. Shakespeare makes a great example of Macbeth of how power trips can really affect a person.
Being an older film compared to most of the more recent Shakespeare adaptations we have watched, I was surprised at how exciting and well-done Polanski's Macbeth turned out. What really struck me was learning that Roman Polanski himself suffered a tragedy after the murder of his wife. A lot of his real-life dark emotions were evident in this film, making the plot and characters that much more believable.
Of all the Shakespeare films we have studied Macbeth is my favorite. I really enjoyed how Shakespeare creates some characters to be so dark and manipulative while nice at the same time.
this film was very exciting and eventful, It was really enjoyable. I really liked the part the witches play, They put a very unique factor into the film.
I too agree with the first comment that this movie is so similar to the other tragedies because in the end everyone ends up loosing their mind and killing eachother for revenge. I think Polanski did a great job portraying this madness, tragedy, and death in a remarkable and emotion impacting way. He made the ending so dark that it almost seems as if he used his personal experiences with death in the portrayal of it in his movies.
This film was one of my favorite Shakespeare tragedies. I agree that Polanski did an excellent job with this film. Especially visually representing the gore throughout the film. The overall presentation was truly flawless. The film was a little too slow, but that would be my only criticism.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film. Having never watched Polanski's take on Hamlet i did not quite know how he would change it up. I thought his use of voiceovers was a great way to bring the audience into the mind of the characters as opposed to Ian Mckellen's breaking of the 4th wall to talk to the audience.
I have seen other versions and when i was reading the play i always saw the wife being far more conniving and in way more control. i felt in this version she didn’t really act her heart out and was in the best position to steal the show and chose to be a side character instead.
What really won me over with this movie was the gore. I really liked how Polanski wasn't afraid of it, but embraced it. The different imagery that he used throughout the play was used really well.
i noticed a stricking parallel between the fate of Macbeth and that of tony montana from scar face. Not being the biggest fan of scar face in general i thought this play gave that movie a little bit more depth. That being said i throughly enjoyed this play on its own and thought it was brilliantly directed. I especially enjoyed Polanskis take on the visions that plagued Macbeth throughout the movie.
This was probably my favorite film out of all the tragedy films. Polanski did a great job of showing the gore, tragedy, and death in this film. One thing I did like was that the characters didn't talk directly to the camera. Most of the dialogue was from their thoughts.
As I reflect back on to the film I believe that this was a very well done film. I enjoyed the actors and actresses. I felt that Polanski did a great job at portraying his view on the play. I really liked the dreams that were used to show guild within the characters. In my opinion he did a great job.
Macbeth by palonski was a great film. it was so brilliantly done. they just dont make movies like they used to. the film was so gory and real i personally think the graphics and special effects are better in this movie than any of the blockbusters that are coming out theese days. for example the scene in which Macbeth is haunted by Banquo at the banquet and you see his graphic dead body at the table looking at macbeth and then it cuts to Banquo turning and smiling with the axe still in his back and blood pouring out of his mouth. another distubring scene which you dont seen in movies anymiore is the scene where Macbeth revisits the witches and its like 30-40 butt naked super ugly witches doing wierd rituals. i reallly enjoyed this film and i am disapointed they dont make great films like this anymore.
Macbeth was one of the hardest movies for me to understand out of the films we've seen yet. Although it was difficult for me to keep track of the characters and plot throughout the movie, I still found it very interesting and entertaining. By the end of the movie, I understood what had happened throughout the entire film. One scene that really stuck out to me (and I'm sure to many other viewers) was when Macbeth goes to see the witches and drinks the hallucinogen. By writing that scene, Shakespeare really allows the audience to feel how "insane" Macbeth is going. Polanski did a great job of filming that scene, and I believe it really helped the audience connect with the film.
I really enjoyed this film. I think the director did a great job in intensifying the scenes and drawing in the audience. I think the power struggle was portrayed perfectly.
HeyHay Lady Macbeth is one psycho lady. The acting of Francesca Annis was disturbing. I did not understand why she was naked in front of her servant and doctor. This fact seemed peculiar but added to the intensity as she lost her mind. Although her death seemed the most poignant part of the film since her husband had little care for her demise.
I found this movie very interesting and funny on some parts of the film, but at the same time the flim itself seemed odd to me. The film Macbeth was violent and filled with a lot of insane people, like most of his plays. But I would highly recommand this flim to people who likes to watch intense movie.
I really enjoyed the irony of the story. Macbeth and his wife kill the king for personal gain then once Macbeth is king of Scotland he becomes paranoid that he will suffer the same fate.
I personally found it very interesting that the same play could be portrayed in such different ways (speaking on the two Macbeth films). Macbeth with Mel Gibson was a little more contemporary while Polanski's dove deep in rather frightening scenes such as the witches gathering and the death of Lady Macbeth. Overall I didn't like this version from a Shakespearian stand point or just someone looking for entertainment. This film missed the mark for me.
I thought the actor who played Macbeth and the actress who played Lady Macbeth did such a convincing job in showing how the greed took over him/her and how the guilt weighed on him/her that I could really feel at the end of the movie, how the guilt induced insanity overthrew them. After the witches told Macbeth that he would be thane of cowdore, and it became true, you could see the grin and hopefulness on his face that the prophecy they had predicted might come to fruition. Lady Macbeth’s scene where she is washing her hands of blood during her sleepwalking was the stand out scene for me in the movie. It summed up how the drive to be in power had made them corrupt and shameful of what they had done. I also thought when Macbeth had sought after Banquo and specifically his son as well; it put an emphasis on how far he would go just to conceal his secrets. (Killing a child).
Macbeth was by far one of Shakespeares better tragedys. The voice overs made the experience more intense and in this play the characters did not look at the camera which made it seem more realistic as well. People usually dont think about their consequences to their actions until after the deed has been done, here is a perfect example. The bloodshed keeps the movie mood gorey as well
i would have to disagree with most of the discussion board here. Macbeth was by far the worst film we have viewed in class. it was hard and almost unbearable to watch. i did not enjoy they cast and the direction of the film by Polsanski was terrible. This was the worst experience i have had in the class all semester and it was surprising, because most all the other films have been alright and have lived up the the expectations i have had for adaptations of Shakespeare's stories.
I thought this film had an understanding plot but felt that the film was very long. I found it not very thought out how Macbeth and Lady Macbeth plotted the King's murder at the beginning of the film. Although Macbeth killed the two guards because he accused them of killing the king, he and Lady Macbeth made the killing seem very obvious as to who didn't kill the king and who really did. The film seemed to drag on and there were some parts that I felt did not follow with the story. For example, I'm not sure if I missed something, but I didn't understand why Macduff had left his town and his family and why Macbeth had sent his men to kill Macduff's family and destroy his town.
This movie didn't show the violence happen but only the aftermath. this is a way to get the viewer to think about the things Macbeth did instead of just showing it. the craziness of Macbeth is shown well through the crazy witches which seem to be some type of "trip" in the movie. they Promise macbeth to be king if he kills Mac Duff, this is just crazieness and even at the end of the film you see it agian when the young son of Duncan goes to the witches to try to gain power will to do anything to get it like Macbeth
I've read the play before but this play showed a little more details than the play. One thing the film removed though was the leader of the witches. The scene that was unexpected though was the scene where one of the characters at the end of the play goes to see the witches.
this film brought me back to high school when we got to watch this film in my english class my senior year. the first time i saw it i didnt understand it at all, but the second time around i understood this film alot better and would probably get it even more if i watched it again.
Roman Polanski has the ability to direct captivating and intense films and this was no different. My favourite aspect of this film was the fact that the actors never addressed the camera directly, their thoughts were presented to us in their heads rather than through the camera. My only problem with this film adaptation was the level of violence and bloodshed. I understand that Shakespeare stories are often tragic but I felt as though this one was somewhat overdone, I don't handle blood and gore very well. Though the scene with Lady Macbeth unsuccessfully attempting to wash the blood of her hands was captivating.
The discussion we had the week after viewing this helped me appreciate the film more than I did simply by watching it. The detail at the end with Donalbain approaching the witches went completely over my head, but I like knowing it was there because the historical Donalbain was king of Scotland for about three years
I felt this production dealt with the dirty, bloody side and Macbeth's dilemma very realistically. The actors were all directed to have very truthful reactions, and instead of just orating Shakespeare's words, I saw them truly crafting the thoughts, running into problems, and finding solutions. Though the 1970s style direction and loud, jarring music of this old school psychological thriller seemed dated now, I see how it could have been effective in its day. I particularly enjoyed Macbeth's soliloquy before he's killed the King. He is on the balcony at the banquet, and was so clear and understandable in both physical and emotional tone. It made me want to play that part.
I enjoyed this film so much! I liked how the movie started with the witch scene and ended in the exact same way but directed towards Macbeth's brother. My favorite part, even though it was kind of sad to watch, was when Lady Macbeth was mentally ill and she kept repeating the night she and Macbeth killed the king in her head. I thought she played this part very well and also liked when she kept thinking that her hands were still covered with blood.
I'd have to say that I did enjoy the film. Im glad that it was played using modern language as I have a hard time following Skakespeare film's that use traditional Shakespearean writing. I thought the direct did well with captivating the audience and keeping us interested. Not my favorite Shakespeare film, but it was well done considering when it was made.
I really enjoyed this whole movie. This movie was blood filled and showed us how Macbeth had to deal with his dilemma's. Even though he ended up getting killed in the end it still portrayed the great story of Macbeth. The crazy thing about this story is how Macbeth really feel's completely invincible after he goes and talk's to the witches. This leads Macbeth to think that he has way to much confidence. Which lead to the tragic death of Macbeth, so it just goes to show don't feel to confident till you have won the battle for certain.
This film was very brutal! I think that the main theme would be guilt and ultimately karma. The guilt that Lady Macbeth feels eventually leads to her suicide because she just cannot take the fact that she participated in a crime. Macbeth's greed caused him to kill the king, but "what goes around comes around," when MacDuff kills him as punishment. This film was done well, however, I felt that it kind of dragged on and on, but overall it was good.
I enjoyed Macbeth. The Witches kind of reminded me of the Witches that Perseus meets in his journey also. The confidence that this gives him a sense of purpose and like he has a destiny to fulfill. This propelled him into conflict after conflict. The story of Lady Macbeth shows what the guilty conscious can do to a person. It shows the difference between how men handle murder and women do also. This movie should be redone. If they did it now they could do it some real justice for the story. The last scene of Macbeth fighting MacDuff dragged on forever, I feel it was done to show how determined Macbeth was.
I thought the roman Polanski version of this play was very good and very entertaining. It was a film that had many intense scenes that represented the things that Polanski experienced in his own life.
I liked the film more than I thought I would have. While it was an older film, the mash up of violence, comedy, and romance was more than enough to keep me occupied. The movies was slow to start but once the murder was plotted it was very entertaining.
This movie was probably my favorite out of all the ones that we have watched in class this semester. There were many intense scenes, but the addition of comedy and romance seemed to balance it out. This seemed to make it more enjoyable for a broader audience.
I really enjoyed this film and would say it was one of my favorites. It was very bloody and gory in a way that made the film strong. It was very easy to follow the story throughout the film and I thought the characters did an amazing job. This film kept me reeled in and wasn't too dark.
This version of Macbeth I feel strongly showed the emotion and drama of the play. The actors did a fantastic job with their roles, really playing up their character's desires and personal struggles. Even though it was a little more gore than I'm used to, this film held my interest the entire movie and I felt it was very well done.
This film was done very well. I personally love Macbeth and felt like this movie really brought out the emotion of the play. The one thing that really was amazing was the acting done by all the actors and actresses. Hats off to their wonderful rendition of Macbeth.
When I first read Macbeth I felt like this play could be made into a very creepy movie. This movie wasn't as dark and dangerous as I had wanted it to be, but It was very good nonetheless. For example, Polanski could have made the witches much more supernatural, but he went for a more naturalistic and dirty look.
I've seen and read Macbeth a number of times, I've seen Simpson renditions, and I've read the comical parody Macbett. By far this is my least favorite. I can respect it for what it was, and the serious and drawn out scenes, but with a play as powerful and gripping as this, I feel the director could've done a lot more.
Macbeth a drawing and appealing story, one of Skakespeare's finest dramatic production. Corruption, fantasy, and internal affairs between Macbeth and her conscience. The use of violence is very vivid and passionate and helps to show how much depth his stories had how much more was really going on
I really enjoyed this particular adaption of Shakespeare's Macbeth. Something that has always confused me about Lady Macbeth and Macbeth's relationship is how the original idea to start killing people for Macbeth to come to power was Lady Macbeth's idea while Macbeth felt extremely guilty about pursuing her plot. However, by the end of the play their roles have completely switched and it is Lady Macbeth who eventually kills herself because she can't live with what she has done.
I enjoyed this movie because it was a much more artistic interpretation of Shakespeare's plays rather than a complete reproduction. I believe that if there has already been a copy of the play released, why not use an artistic license? Not necessarily change the dialogue or key plot points, but subtle things that would be the movie identifiable over the countless Shakespeare reproductions, and I believe Macbeth (1971) does just that.
I also believe that Jon Finch was cast perfectly as Macbeth. It takes a certain type of person to play a ruthless Scottish King who will stop at nothing to maintain his power.
Finch plays Macbeth with much more resolution as well as calmness than is usually used while playing this role, however he fits in perfectly, and his final line "My Name is Macbeth!" is perfectly portrayed.
I really enjoyed this version of the play by polanski. I thought it portrayed the theme of revenge and greed very well. Also, Lady macbeth was good but I think in the Throne of Blood she was played to more of what shakespeare was trying to represent.
I really liked polanski's version of the film was better then the other versions i had view on youtube. I dont think macbeth is my favorite of shakespeares plays though.
Macbeth isn't one of my favorites but this film was entertaining nontheless. Even if it was corny and violent to a point of being hilarious at times. I do need to give credit to the film for portraying the witchs as they were. I was genuinly creeped out by them.
I thought that Polanski's version of Macbeth was way better than Welles's version. All the characters were being portrayed really well. All the actors did a really great job including the director himself, as well. Overall,I thought this film was really intense.
This film was another one that was really hard for me to watch. Even though it didnt have any rape scenes, all the killing was bad enough for me. This film had a different story to it so it was nice to see a film where the main character is the one who has convicted all these crimes and becomes the enemy of the world. This was a quite different and interesting one for me.
I enjoyed Polanski's version much more than Wells's. It was a little more exciting and I was able to become more attached to the characters. It was also much more brutal. However, I did not enjoy it more for that reason. Polanski did a good job and it was an interesting adaptation to "Macbeth."
This was definitely my favorite tragedy by Shakespeare. The casting was perfect as was the set. I loved how Polanski had the characters do inner monologues instead of soliloquies. By doing so, he mad the film much more relatable to the audience and less cheesy. This film, likewise to Hamlet also had the theme of revenge strewn through it. It showed the lust for power. It did an excellent portrayal of that time period when brothers would kill brothers and uncles would kill nephews, anything to receive the throne.
I though that this film was kind of crazy however I did enjoy it. This film did have a more dark appeal to it then then other films that we have watched. I though that the director did a good job at deciding to make the film more graphic.
I thought it was an interesting choice to make Macbeth and Lady Macbeth younger in Polanski's version. I felt that a young actress playing Lady Macbeth made her seem more dangerous in the short clip that we watched in class, because she looked so beautiful and sweet which hides her murderous intent. Even though it is an interesting choice, I wouldn't say that it is a faithful portrayal of her character because there is a theme of Lady Macbeth wanting to be "unsexed" and to have her milk exchanged for bile and to have the power of a man, so having a beautiful young actress really cancels out that part of play.
I loved this play but was not to into this movie I found it somewhat boring to be honest. I loved the scenery used, the setting being exactly what I pictured. I actually preferred Welles' movie over this one. There was something about the screeching sounds, the black and white filming, and cheap props that drew me in over this movie in comparison.
Even though this film had a little bit more of a dark side to it, I still enjoyed as much as Welles's version of Macbeth. I thought that the casting was perfect and I loved each scenery.
Macbeth is defInitelu my favorite Shakespeare movie. The 2010 version was better than both the versions we saw in class all in all this was a great movie
Roman Polanski's version of Macbeth was very powerful and stayed true to the original Shakespeare play. This version of Macbeth had a more dark feel to it and the scnenery created an interesting settin for the movie that was a lot like i would havge imagined Macbeth myself
This was one of my least favorite movies we've watched, particularly due to the fact that it was so gruesome and negative. I did like how the theme centered around the dangers of too much ambition and power. I think Macbeth started out an honest man, but the idea of power got to him and overpowered his conscience. This was characterized by his hallucinations that plagued both him and his wife, representing their internal guilt for their crimes. Overall, good overpowered evil and the rebels in England won over the castle once again.
This was just another typical Shakespeare tragedy. I did not enjoy this film at all but I stilll repspect what the director was trying to display to his audience. I just did not really get it and was not enthusiastic about watching the movie. Not a terrible film but certainly nothing I would watch at home.
This film was very long and seemed to have unnecessary scenes in it that forced it to drag out, however I still thoroughly enjoyed the film. My only real complaint was the battle scene at the end with Macbeth seemed more like they were play fighting rather than a man enraged trying to avenge his family's death as it was intended. I thought this took away from the film's intensity.
I like Macbeth and I like the themes this movies goes on about. The idea that power and wealth will consume you as it does Macbeth. I think it is something important for people to think about and to not change as a person. Obviously Macbeth could've used this advice.
In my opinion Macbeth is a very deep and meaningful play, when you look at all the underlying factors that he faces. I thought that the movie did a very good job when picking the people to play each charter. They interacted well together making the film more believable. I have read the play before in high school but until watching the film and rereading specific passages did I really get the whole picture of the play. I really enjoyed.
This version of Macbeth is one of the more disturbing ones to me. I feel like it's extremely dark and gory. I understand that this play is very dark and bloody but not to the extent that it was in this film. I felt like it might have been overkill just a little bit.
I definitely felt like there were some unnecessary scenes in this version of Macbeth. The play was accurate to Shakespeare, but was dragged on entirely too long for my liking.
I agree with JBeltran in that there were a few unecessarily long or dragged out scenes that made the movie a bit tedious. However, overall it was one of my favority films this semester because of the excellent acting and directing from Polanski. The background about Polanski's wife's murder also added a lot to the film. It was clear how much that memory still haunted him, especially in the brutality of the the murder of MacDuff's family. The actor and actress who played Macbeth and his wife were excellent together, they really managed to portray how their murder made them slowly go insane. The ending fight scene was well choreographed and was a fitting end to the film
This was not my favorite Shakespeare film that we watched in class but I did enjoy the violent controversy this version of macbeth had to offer. The style of the film wasnt for me, but if you like watching a character struggle with there own insanity like inception then i would recommend this film.
I liked how Roman Polanski opted to change the traditional conveyance of Shakespeare's soliloquies. I thought it was a cool idea to do Macbeth's part as a voice over.
I do agree with some of the above comments. I think that film went on way to long, because of some dragged out scenes.
Overall i thought it was a good and enjoyable film.
My favorite part of this film would have to be the character of Lady Macbeth. In the beginning of the film she is very calm and collected, and willing to do anything to see her husband gain power. After Macbeth kills the King, he seems to have gone mad when he is at the well washing his hands. He barely speaks, and has his wife fix the murder so it looks like the guards did the deed. Later in the film however, Lady Macbeth starts to show signs of hallucination. In one scene she is trying to wash the blood from her hands, just as her husband had done after the murder.
This was a bit more difficult for me to enjoy. Polanski's version of Macbeth is much darker than an other I have ever seen, and while it's still a good movie, I wouldn't go as far to say it's the best I've seen. It did portray the much darker aspects of Macbeth's struggle against fate, only to see his actions were in vain, and lead to his own demise.
You can reach the ShakespeareFlix editor by emailing "shakespeareflix at gmail dot com." He'd especially like to hear from people with blogs and websites that could be included on a list of resources for Shakespeare movie lovers.
ReplyDeleteI love macbeth. It is my favorite of SHakespeare's tragedies so i enjoyed it very much. I also loved how they filmed the scene where Lady Macbeth goes insane and can't wash the blood from her hands. I think everyone did a really good job acting as well.
ReplyDeleteI liked this movie more than I anticipated. I think Roman did a great job directing because he made the story more significant by incorporating symoblism and bold visuals. However, it was really violent maybe more so than it needed to be. Overall, I enjoyed the movie.
ReplyDeleteThe movie was captivating!! Definitely more than I expected. I agree with everything said above, the imagery and symbolism and the INTENSITY! It was absolutley wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI have always thought that Roman Polansky was a great director.
ReplyDeleteI loved how Polanski never hesitates to show some gore to give the film a more violent edge. The cinematography made the film a visually pleasing with images of landscapes.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this MacBeth film. I felt that the characters really interacted well with eachother to show the true meaing of this play. The director did an excellant job of portraying this captivating play. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThis film was a great film that kept my interest throughout its duration.
ReplyDeleteThis movie was really interesting.
ReplyDeleteIn Macbeth we again see the story of someone going insane. I liked the way in which the director portrayed the steps to his insanity, first showing him upset with it after his first murders then fully grasping the concept of simply killing everyone is his path. I agree with the above statement of how Lady Macbeth could not seem to wash the blood from her hands, making symbolism very apparent.
ReplyDeletePolanski did a great job of directing this film and relating it to his personal issues. It's crazy to think that he is connected to the Manson murders. I enjoyed this tragedy because it wasn't extremely gory but was still able to express the hatred.
ReplyDeleteMacbeth is also like other Shakespeare plays, in that it deals with insanity and murder to get to the top. I remember reading this play in high school and I really enjoyed it. We also watched a different version of the movie. Watching it this week made me realize that it was better than I remember.
ReplyDeleteThis is by far one of shakespeares best plays. The play deals Macbeth going insane and his struggles to stay in power. I thought it was very interesting how Polanski used the witches to forshadow Macbeth's rise to power with would eventually lead to his demise.
ReplyDeleteSkennedy12 is right, Lady Macbeth is an intricate character, and the real marvel in it is how much of her role is up to the director's interpretation. I have seen a number of plays in which she is cast either younger or older than the actor playing Macbeth and that changes her character dramatically. On one side you have Macbeth trying to impress a younger woman and on the other you have him being controlled by an older woman.
ReplyDeleteThe characters in Macbeth did a very good job in the varying roles.
ReplyDeleteRoman Planski did a generally good job at portraying macbeth as a film.
ReplyDeleteI found this movie very interesting and a extremely similar to how Shakespeare wrote the play. Macbeth was violent and filled with a lot of insane people, like most of his plays. I have seen other versions of Macbeth and this one is by far my favorite.
ReplyDeletegreat movie! the director did an awesome job with the anticipation. i also liked how violent it was. this film reminds me most of a modern day film you would see in the theaters today.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed watching the movie version.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion Polanski achieves some of the most accurate and realistic depictions of how Macbeth is written, than the majority of the films we have watched. I felt the audience was really drawn into the action through living the story the way Macbeth would have, i.e. in a castle, with the mud, and the specifically the witches impressed me a lot.
ReplyDeleteMost modern directors adapting William Shakespeare's plays for today's cinema audience skip or drastically alter vast portions of text in order to make the story more accessible. However, Roman Polanski's 1971 version of Macbeth clarifies and emphasizes certain aspects of the story while rarely resorting to such wholesale word chopping.
ReplyDeleteI feel that Roman Polansky took the production of Shakespeare plays to another level. He was not afraid to add drastic visual aids to emphasize scenes from the play. It made this movie memorable and entertaining to watch.
ReplyDeleteNice adaptation of Shakespeares play. Obviously any director has to make changes to the original text for the transfer to the screen, but I thought Polanski handled it well. Knowing what Polanski was going through at the time, you really notice his touch on the film, especially with the themes of insanity and violence.
ReplyDeleteMacbeth is my favorite Shakespeare play.
ReplyDeleteThis was another film which was more ejoyable to me. The film was brutal and gory and Macbeth did anything he could to attain power. That reminded of Richard III. I thought this film was done very well and the actors did a great job.
ReplyDeleteIt was an intense approach to Shakespeare which I loved! I love how you can bring out human emotion so much more in film compared to plays. I wonder how theatre actors approached Lady Macbeth. I would think that this up close portrayal would be a lot more difficult to nail, but it turned out great. Powerful stuff.
ReplyDeleteWow I love this movie!
ReplyDeleteMacbeth is such a classic, this movie is so dark with the lengths Macbth and his wife will go for ultimate power of the crown. i think it serves his wife right that she ends up going crazy, while suicide wouldnt be my first choice for her, it just makes the plot that much deeper. Shakespeare knows how to write some of the most tragic plays i have ever read, macbeth wins the award for "most tragic"
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Macbeth, and although i expected there to be more blood and gore i enjoyed the fact that the film became more grosome in deluted minds instead of bodies as the movie went on. BRILLIANT!
ReplyDeleteMacbeth is easily one of my favorite Shakespeare's tragedies and Polanski does a wonderful job at capturing everything that makes this story so great, onto a screen. I love Macbeth in this movie, the actress plays her with such passion and power. As you watch it you can feel the struggle and passion that each character gives. Overall this movie was very enjoyable to watch and follow.
ReplyDeleteI was Actually in the Macbeth play back in high school. The movie portayed it much different from how we presented it. It was fun to see may character, the third witch. I thought the movie was very entertaining and well put together.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this movie... The director does a good job threw out the film and love all the action in the movie. The actors also do a very good job.
ReplyDeleteWhat i loved about this movie is that although Macbeth is the evil character he didn't start out that way.
ReplyDeleteThe director once again did great on this film. Not only did he make one of the greatest Shakespeare re-makes ever but he used action and passion to give this film the final push it needed.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this movie because I love to see a woman who is a strong villain. She manipulated her husband to get what she wanted. "The deceiver will always find someone ready to be deceived."
ReplyDeleteThis version of Macbeth was very gory and violent in some scenes. Macbeth and Macduff anger toward one another was seen in the last fight scene ending with Macbeth's head cut off. You could real feel the anger towards one another and how much they truly hated each other. To say the least, Macduff seeked his revenge.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Craig Musich that were some horrifying and violent scenes!

ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the Macbeth film. Polanski did a great job with the film. I thought the actors did a great job throughout the film. It was one of my favorite films we have watched in class so far. Shakespeare's tragedies are so intense and it was a little brutal at times but a very interesting film to view.
ReplyDeleteI had seem this movie back in highschool, but it had been some time. I really like the story of macbeth, and I think they did a good job in this movie. It really shows how far people will go to have power. A very revenge filled plot.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the storyline in Macbeth. i found it interesting that in the end power was the death of him. All that he worked so hard for was given up by his guilty concious and power was the victor.
ReplyDeleteI really liked Macbeth. I found that the corruption and power theme to be very interesting and prevalent in todays society. People are willing to do anything to have ultimate power.
ReplyDeleteI did not like Macbeth very much.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this film. Macbeth has an intriguing story. To me it doesn't strike me as a Shakespeare play. I don't know much about Shakespeare, but it seems like a Greek play. Lady Macbeth in the film was probably my least favorite of the characters. She seemed very whiney and needy to me.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this film. To me it brought up an interesting philosophical question. The self-fulfilling prophecy. That is if Macbeth did not hear the prophecy would he have murdered the king? Would he become king? I really liked the scene where they were washing the blood of the hands. This foreshadows all the darkness to come later in the play.
ReplyDeleteMacbeth really exposes the dark potential a Roman Polanski can bring to a shakespeare play. The dark setting mixed with the muddy and rainy visual effects. Just as the play the movie Macbeth spares no disregard for loss of human life. Characters are being hung, having their heads cut off, and even jumping out of castle windows. I believe Polanski articulated Macbeth quite well on screen.
ReplyDeleteI think it is interesting how the play opens in the middle of a lightning and thunder storm with three witches present. I feel like this is an ominous start for and ominous play. This could be considered foreshadowing that the play is full of murders and deceitful actions. These witches are the ones who put this crazy idea of becoming king in Macbeth’s head. Without them Macbeth would never have had the ambition to become king.
ReplyDeleteIm definitely in Shakespeare's tragedy's, there is generally on character go striving to be king, or have some piece of the throne, and once they achieve that goal it really doesn't seem to be enough. They usually have murdered someone and begin having guilt and resenting themselves, going crazy and a majority of the people die.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed watching this film. It kept my attention throughout the whole thing. Shakespeare seems to have a common theme for the hunger for power. I have found that there is always one character who wants power and will do anything to get it. But those traits seem to keep the films and plays interesting.
ReplyDeleteI find the story-line of this film/play so interesting.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this film on MacBeth. It is one of my favorite Shakespeare tragedy's and the murder scenes are portrayed very well in this film. I like both of the interpretations of Macbeth but i like this version a little more because the violence is more intense and allows you to get into the movie.
ReplyDeleteI believe that both interpretations of Macbeth were very well done, Polanski's and Throne Of Blood. I agree with LMW that Lady Washizu was wicked. But I really enjoyed Lady Macbeth, the actress at least. She portrayed her very well.
ReplyDeleteI agree with ElleMichelle and I really loved the actress's portrayal of Lady Macbeth. Unfortunately, that was almost the only thing I liked about the movie. I followed the story well enough and the story itself is obviously good, but I had a hard time staying awake during the film. Once people started dying my attention was hooked, but a while I was not remotely captivated.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed watching this version of Macbeth, good to see Polanski isn't afraid to really show the violent themes on film, really enjoyed his version of a classic play.
ReplyDeleteI really like this version of Macbeth and I thought that it was depicted very well and also Lady Macbeth was played very well into this movie. I really enjoyed her character.
ReplyDeleteThis version of Macbeth is very interesting to me. I really like how it goes a long with the play for the most part and has a lot of the "famous" scenes from the Macbeth play.
ReplyDeleteLady Macbeth is a sociopath.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this version of the play by polanski. I thought it portrayed the theme of revenge and greed very well. Also, Lady macbeth was good but I think in the Throne of Blood she was played to more of what shakespeare was trying to represent.
ReplyDeleteMacBeth was very interesting. I liked it a lot. It was very interesting to see how Lady MacBeth thought that she was not having issues with the killing, but in reality she was subconsciously. Macbeth though was very evil which is understandable, but he was very stupid. He relied to much in the prophecies.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to add to what I said before because I saw some people such as LMW, Nick and Zguild comparing the throne of blood to Macbeth.

ReplyDeleteI've always liked the play Macbeth and found it interesting.
ReplyDeletePolanski’s film adaptation of Macbeth was very entertaining.
ReplyDeleteThroughout the whole film, the weather seemed foggy and misty.

ReplyDeleteThis year is the first year I have ever experienced Roman Polansky’s work and I am starting to see why so many people think he is a great director.

ReplyDeleteI think that Lady Macbeth did a great job acting crazy.
ReplyDeleteThe story that was being interpreted in the many many different ways with "Throne of Blood" and the movie that we watched in class. The story in "Throne of Blood" seemed to be more comical with the fortune teller looking all crazy, and the how the lady Macbeth went crazy. yet it was a good story and it was a good take on the Macbeth story.
ReplyDeleteSarah C
ReplyDeletei thought the movie was very interesting and a lot more complex then what was suggested. Each character has something about them that is discovered further into the movie.

ReplyDeleteI thought this movie was interesting.

ReplyDeleteMacbeth is a play i love.
I think that this movie was very good while also being kind of gory. I agree with others about how this was better after seeing throne of blood.
ReplyDeleteI really like this version of Macbeth. It was very well done for when it was made. There were some unnecessary scenes of nudity in the film, but other than that it was good.
ReplyDeleteSince I have never seen or read Macbeth before this class, the movie kept me very entertained because I had no idea what was going to happen. The end was my favorite part even though it was really violent and gory. The "witches" added an interesting and somewhat comical touch to the movie as well.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I enjoyed this particular version of Macbeth, but possibly for the wrong reasons. Although I enjoyed "Throne of Blood", at times the film was a bit disappointing. I think the reason I enjoyed Macbeth was because it was full of much more excitement than "Throne of Blood". I was very pleased with the intensity and violence that the movie portrayed.
ReplyDeleteHaving never read Macbeth or seen any movies on it, I thought this film was very well done, and I enjoyed watching it. It was intriguing to me to pay attention to all the characters and their actions, and the way the film was directed really made me feel connected to the characters and their emotions. I liked how there was always something going on in the movie, and there were rarely moments in this film that I was uninterested.
ReplyDeleteHaving read Macbeth, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. i loved that i could compare the play and the movie and give a face to the characters. However, if you had not read the play i think that the plot would have a been a little difficult to follow
ReplyDeletei enjoyed this film, and i do agree that the plot would have been a bit difficult to follow had I not read the play, however I felt that I had very different ideas of what the characters should look like. I pictured Lady Macbeth as somewhat hard woman with a streak of evil that was very present throughout the film. It was really difficult for me to picture Francesca Annis, who was very young, beautiful, and golden, as an evil wife. To me, she just did not fit the part.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Macbeth.
ReplyDeleteReading the play definitely helped me understand and enjoy this movie. I thought that Polanski did a good job with Lady Macbeth, and it was interesting that she was portrayd as less uptight than she is in other versions of Macbeth.
ReplyDeleteSome neat things I saw through the film that caught my attention of liking was that how each scene led to one another very fluidly and that there was always some kind of action either violently or just by the overall sense of power that was to be obtained by anyway necessary. the film focused on corresponding both adult’s and teens as the directer brought violent and gore to the scene as well as he demonstrated quality acting and a good sense of feel of Elizabethan Era.
ReplyDeleteThe play was intense from beginning to end. Insanity is sure to take a huge role in the play. The scenes seemed to go through quite well, It made sense for first time watchers, definitely for me.
ReplyDeleteVery powerful film. Polanski did a great job with this because he could pull from his own experiences. these horrible tragedies, he's actually experienced them. the film was just very powerful in that respect. it was well done
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Macbeth as a play a lot and liked the movie more than i thought i would. I liked the artistic angles the director used. Also i thought it was a great performance by Lady Macbeth
ReplyDeleteI thought this movie was great, it is a story about the struggle for power, which is one of the most sown upon thing in today society. It shows that almost everyones no matter how much power they have they will always be looking for more. Just like in todays society, no matter how rich someone is they will always be trying to gain more. I think the acting was also great, each character had a unique thing to add to the movie that spiced thing up a bit.
ReplyDeletePolanski did a wonderful job bringing this tragedy to the big screen. This is one of my favorite Shakespearean tragedies. This film was very violent, but I think it is justified in it's intensity because of the immense violence in the original story.
ReplyDeleteMacbeth is my favorite tragedy by Shakespeare by far. My favorite part in the movie was when lady macbeth was going crazy because she shouldn't get the blood off her hands. I thought the actress did a really good job playing that scene.
ReplyDeleteThis is, in my opinion, Shakespeare's best tragedy. The violence in this film was intense, but it really portayed the intensity of this time period and the story at hand. Lady McBeth did a wonderful job with this role because she went along well with the violent nature of this movie
ReplyDeleteMacbeth was an all around good film. Out of all of the tragedies we have seen i feel like this one was my favorite. it was a very emotional play that was really powerful. the actors did a great job portraying the characters. it was a violent film that captured many of the realities of real life.
ReplyDeleteMacbeth is one popular shakespeare play. It is one of his most tragic plays and the film was just that. Overall Im glad I got to actually find out the story ive hear about for so many years.
ReplyDeleteI always pictured the Lord and Lady Macbeth as older and more cynical. It seemed to me that they started off fairly innocent, and then when Macbeth is told that he will be King, that all changes. I was amazed at how Lady Macbeth could scheme and plot with her husband about the murder of King Duncan, and then dance with her intended victim not five minutes later! Great film! :)
ReplyDelete-GMW
I thought this version was wonderful because to me Macbeth is all about the violence and fight scenes which were portrayed wonderfully in this film. Blood symbolizes more than just violence in this play is symbolizes guilt as well and this movie does not lose that aspect.
ReplyDeleteI liked how the characters did not speak to the camera, how it was their thoughts in their heads that were said out loud to fill in the audience of their thoughts.
ReplyDeleteL.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed how powerful the performance in this film of Macbeth was!
ReplyDeleteI liked the raw feeling of this film. There was such an obvious, tense inner struggle with so many of the characters, and the actors did a beautiful job portraying that. I liked the use of the stormy weather to make the film feel darker and more grim. I honestly did not know what to think when I heard it was a playboy production, but I was pleasantly surprised.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the emotion and conflict that Polanski was able to convey throughout the film. You could genuinely sense the internal conflict in the Macbeth as he is carrying out his plan. Polanski's use of the setting to determine the mood, such as the weather as stated above, really helped me understand where the mood of the film was at overall.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Macbeth and thought it was one of Shakespeare's better plays. I had never read or watched Macbeth before taking this class and I was taken aback at the amount of violence and gore, but the symbolism was brilliant. Overall, I think that Macbeth was one of Shakespeare's best tragedies and it was helped by the terrific acting in particular.
ReplyDelete-Jordan Williams
macbeth was my favorite film thus far. I felt that this story proves that shakespeare likes to teach through his writing that what goes around comes around. also I was very disturbed when all the weird sisters were nude.
ReplyDelete-slightlystoopid
Roman Polanski did a great job. Great acting and scenery. Gore and nudity are absolutely necessary to get into the medieval feel of the movie. At some parts the limits of cinema are evident, when transcribing literary masterpieces. Only a theatrical play can bind the actor and the audience.
ReplyDeleteMacbeth was a great tragic movie a lot of nude parts in the film. I agree that this was Shakespeare best tragic play and the dagger that Macbeth sees just before he kills Duncan in Act 2.
ReplyDeleteI found this film to be very unique, as well as the play, in their choice of character.
ReplyDeleteMacbeth is a very exciting and appealing story to me, i believe it is William Skakespeare's best dramatic production. It involves corruption, fantasy, and the internal battle Macbeth had with her guilty conscience. The use of violence is very vivid and passionate in this story and i feel the film shows how great of writer Shakespeare really was and how much depth his stories had.
ReplyDeleteThis was a very dark and terrifying rendition of the play. I feel that Polanski managed to really create the gloomy atmosphere and frightening feel of feudal era life. I also feel that this film made use of an excellent accompanying score performed by the Third Ear Band. The groups use of atonal and droning sounds really enhances the films tone.
ReplyDeleteThis is by far my favorite Shakespearian tragedy. I thought it was really interesting the way the director film the scene with Lady Macbeth not being able to scrub her blood stained hands. By far my favorite film we have watched so far.
ReplyDeleteThis is by far my favorite Shakespearian tragedy. I thought it was really interesting the way the director film the scene with Lady Macbeth not being able to scrub her blood stained hands. By far my favorite film we have watched so far.
ReplyDeleteI accidentally posted the one above without putting my name in*.
ReplyDeleteThis play is one of my favorite tragedy plays by Shakespeare. It is filled with dark and twisted characters such as lady macbeth which is all captured on film and gives you the full experience of the play

ReplyDeleteI thought that it was interesting how Lady Macbeth manipulated/convinced Macbeth to kill to get to his rightful power.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed watching this film. I felt that Roman did a great job at directing this film because he made the story line more interesting because he used symbolism and bold visual aids. I also thought this movie was a bit too violent but nonetheless I really enjoyed this.
ReplyDeleteRoman Polanski's version of Macbeth was very straight forward interpretation of the original play. I love how Polanski casted Lady Macbeth. She was very strong willed and independent, just like I think the real Lady Macbeth should be played. All the other bloggers really seemed to agree. This was by far my favorite version of Macbeth so far on screen.
ReplyDelete-Sam Smallwood
I love how Shakespeare can create a perfect flawed figure. The characters he creates are extreme exaple of each spectrum of a persons emotions. He makes even the purist character contimplate its actions and slowing driving them into madeness and paranoia like Macbeth and lady macbeth
ReplyDelete+MJH+
I enjoyed how Shakespeare used dreams to show the amount of guilt people were feeling. One major disagreement is how dumb the walking forest looked at the end, there were hardly any trees and it just didnt look like i would have thought. The walking forest in the movie Throne of Blood was EPIC. They really made it look like the trees were walking. Tuche.
ReplyDeleteJR
This is on the Throne of Blood adaption was I have to say was my most favorite of the movies that we watched in class. The acting was great and casted well even though it was subtitle. Im a big fan of kurasawa and I believe this and his seven samurai movies the best movies ever made. Throne of blood was revolutionary and viusaly stunning for the time it was made.
ReplyDelete+MJH+
I didn't like watching this movie. I've read the book, and I like the plot. But this movie moved extremely slowly. I thought the acting was terrible and it was not fun to watch!
ReplyDeleteI liked this movie a lot. The way Roman Polanski portrayed the film was very good and I really like the symbolism involved in the movie. One thing I was surprised about was the amount of violence but I guess it had to be like that, so I still liked it a lot overall
ReplyDeleteI actually enjoyed reading this play more then I enjoyed the movie. Don't get me wrong I think that Roman Polanski did a good job but It just moved to slow. I agree with ericaburks on that the bad acting really took away from what this movie is all about. Although Lady Macbeth was excellent in this movie.
ReplyDeleteTo me this movie was pretty good, and i really enjoyed the plot of the film.
ReplyDeleteI agree with michael that shakespeare does a good job creating villans. I also think he does a good job of depicting how being evil and power hungry makes people go crazy. Ex. Macbeth and richard III
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Shakespeares film of macbeth, but to be honest i enjoyed the reading of Macbeth more. I enjoy the way Shakespeare makes the villain become such a big factor in the movie. Shakespeare makes a great example of Macbeth of how power trips can really affect a person.
ReplyDeleteBeing an older film compared to most of the more recent Shakespeare adaptations we have watched, I was surprised at how exciting and well-done Polanski's Macbeth turned out. What really struck me was learning that Roman Polanski himself suffered a tragedy after the murder of his wife. A lot of his real-life dark emotions were evident in this film, making the plot and characters that much more believable.
ReplyDeleteOf all the Shakespeare films we have studied Macbeth is my favorite. I really enjoyed how Shakespeare creates some characters to be so dark and manipulative while nice at the same time.
ReplyDeletethis film was very exciting and eventful, It was really enjoyable. I really liked the part the witches play, They put a very unique factor into the film.
ReplyDeleteI too agree with the first comment that this movie is so similar to the other tragedies because in the end everyone ends up loosing their mind and killing eachother for revenge. I think Polanski did a great job portraying this madness, tragedy, and death in a remarkable and emotion impacting way. He made the ending so dark that it almost seems as if he used his personal experiences with death in the portrayal of it in his movies.
ReplyDeleteThis film was one of my favorite Shakespeare tragedies.

ReplyDeleteWhat really won me over with this movie was the gore. I really liked how Polanski wasn't afraid of it, but embraced it. The different imagery that he used throughout the play was used really well.
ReplyDeletei noticed a stricking parallel between the fate of Macbeth and that of tony montana from scar face. Not being the biggest fan of scar face in general i thought this play gave that movie a little bit more depth. That being said i throughly enjoyed this play on its own and thought it was brilliantly directed. I especially enjoyed Polanskis take on the visions that plagued Macbeth throughout the movie.
ReplyDeleteThis was probably my favorite film out of all the tragedy films. Polanski did a great job of showing the gore, tragedy, and death in this film. One thing I did like was that the characters didn't talk directly to the camera. Most of the dialogue was from their thoughts.
ReplyDeleteAs I reflect back on to the film I believe that this was a very well done film. I enjoyed the actors and actresses. I felt that Polanski did a great job at portraying his view on the play. I really liked the dreams that were used to show guild within the characters. In my opinion he did a great job.

ReplyDeleteMacbeth by palonski was a great film. it was so brilliantly done. they just dont make movies like they used to. the film was so gory and real i personally think the graphics and special effects are better in this movie than any of the blockbusters that are coming out theese days. for example the scene in which Macbeth is haunted by Banquo at the banquet and you see his graphic dead body at the table looking at macbeth and then it cuts to Banquo turning and smiling with the axe still in his back and blood pouring out of his mouth. another distubring scene which you dont seen in movies anymiore is the scene where Macbeth revisits the witches and its like 30-40 butt naked super ugly witches doing wierd rituals. i reallly enjoyed this film and i am disapointed they dont make great films like this anymore.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this film. I think the director did a great job in intensifying the scenes and drawing in the audience. I think the power struggle was portrayed perfectly.

ReplyDeleteLady Macbeth is one psycho lady.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the irony of the story. Macbeth and his wife kill the king for personal gain then once Macbeth is king of Scotland he becomes paranoid that he will suffer the same fate.
ReplyDeleteI personally found it very interesting that the same play could be portrayed in such different ways (speaking on the two Macbeth films).
ReplyDeleteI thought the actor who played Macbeth and the actress who played Lady Macbeth did such a convincing job in showing how the greed took over him/her and how the guilt weighed on him/her that I could really feel at the end of the movie, how the guilt induced insanity overthrew them.
ReplyDeleteI also thought when Macbeth had sought after Banquo and specifically his son as well; it put an emphasis on how far he would go just to conceal his secrets. (Killing a child).

ReplyDeleteMacbeth was by far one of Shakespeares better tragedys.
ReplyDeleteMacbeth was one of the creepiest movies yet. The ugly witches were scary and the movie was pretty gruesome.
ReplyDeleteI thought this film had an understanding plot but felt that the film was very long.
ReplyDeleteThis movie didn't show the violence happen but only the aftermath. this is a way to get the viewer to think about the things Macbeth did instead of just showing it. the craziness of Macbeth is shown well through the crazy witches which seem to be some type of "trip" in the movie. they Promise macbeth to be king if he kills Mac Duff, this is just crazieness and even at the end of the film you see it agian when the young son of Duncan goes to the witches to try to gain power will to do anything to get it like Macbeth
ReplyDeleteI've read the play before but this play showed a little more details than the play. One thing the film removed though was the leader of the witches. The scene that was unexpected though was the scene where one of the characters at the end of the play goes to see the witches.
ReplyDeletethis film brought me back to high school when we got to watch this film in my english class my senior year. the first time i saw it i didnt understand it at all, but the second time around i understood this film alot better and would probably get it even more if i watched it again.
ReplyDeleteI thought this film was one of Shakespeare's better tragedies. Even though it was very bloody and gory i still enjoyed the dialog and story line.
ReplyDeleteRoman Polanski has the ability to direct captivating and intense films and this was no different.
ReplyDeleteThe discussion we had the week after viewing this helped me appreciate the film more than I did simply by watching it. The detail at the end with Donalbain approaching the witches went completely over my head, but I like knowing it was there because the historical Donalbain was king of Scotland for about three years
ReplyDeleteI felt this production dealt with the dirty, bloody side and Macbeth's dilemma very realistically.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this film so much!
ReplyDeleteI'd have to say that I did enjoy the film. Im glad that it was played using modern language as I have a hard time following Skakespeare film's that use traditional Shakespearean writing. I thought the direct did well with captivating the audience and keeping us interested. Not my favorite Shakespeare film, but it was well done considering when it was made.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this whole movie.
ReplyDeleteThis film was very brutal!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Macbeth.
ReplyDeleteI thought the roman Polanski version of this play was very good and very entertaining. It was a film that had many intense scenes that represented the things that Polanski experienced in his own life.
ReplyDeleteI liked the film more than I thought I would have. While it was an older film, the mash up of violence, comedy, and romance was more than enough to keep me occupied. The movies was slow to start but once the murder was plotted it was very entertaining.
ReplyDeleteThis movie was probably my favorite out of all the ones that we have watched in class this semester. There were many intense scenes, but the addition of comedy and romance seemed to balance it out. This seemed to make it more enjoyable for a broader audience.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this film and would say it was one of my favorites. It was very bloody and gory in a way that made the film strong. It was very easy to follow the story throughout the film and I thought the characters did an amazing job. This film kept me reeled in and wasn't too dark.
ReplyDeleteThis version of Macbeth I feel strongly showed the emotion and drama of the play. The actors did a fantastic job with their roles, really playing up their character's desires and personal struggles. Even though it was a little more gore than I'm used to, this film held my interest the entire movie and I felt it was very well done.
ReplyDeleteThis film was done very well. I personally love Macbeth and felt like this movie really brought out the emotion of the play. The one thing that really was amazing was the acting done by all the actors and actresses. Hats off to their wonderful rendition of Macbeth.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first read Macbeth I felt like this play could be made into a very creepy movie. This movie wasn't as dark and dangerous as I had wanted it to be, but It was very good nonetheless. For example, Polanski could have made the witches much more supernatural, but he went for a more naturalistic and dirty look.
ReplyDeleteI've seen and read Macbeth a number of times, I've seen Simpson renditions, and I've read the comical parody Macbett. By far this is my least favorite. I can respect it for what it was, and the serious and drawn out scenes, but with a play as powerful and gripping as this, I feel the director could've done a lot more.
ReplyDeleteMacbeth a drawing and appealing story, one of Skakespeare's finest dramatic production. Corruption, fantasy, and internal affairs between Macbeth and her conscience. The use of violence is very vivid and passionate and helps to show how much depth his stories had how much more was really going on
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this particular adaption of Shakespeare's Macbeth.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this movie because it was a much more artistic interpretation of Shakespeare's plays rather than a complete reproduction. I believe that if there has already been a copy of the play released, why not use an artistic license? Not necessarily change the dialogue or key plot points, but subtle things that would be the movie identifiable over the countless Shakespeare reproductions, and I believe Macbeth (1971) does just that.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that Jon Finch was cast perfectly as Macbeth. It takes a certain type of person to play a ruthless Scottish King who will stop at nothing to maintain his power.
ReplyDeleteFinch plays Macbeth with much more resolution as well as calmness than is usually used while playing this role, however he fits in perfectly, and his final line "My Name is Macbeth!" is perfectly portrayed.
I really enjoyed this version of the play by polanski. I thought it portrayed the theme of revenge and greed very well. Also, Lady macbeth was good but I think in the Throne of Blood she was played to more of what shakespeare was trying to represent.
ReplyDeleteI really liked polanski's version of the film was better then the other versions i had view on youtube. I dont think macbeth is my favorite of shakespeares plays though.
ReplyDeleteMacbeth isn't one of my favorites but this film was entertaining nontheless. Even if it was corny and violent to a point of being hilarious at times. I do need to give credit to the film for portraying the witchs as they were. I was genuinly creeped out by them.
ReplyDeleteI thought that Polanski's version of Macbeth was way better than Welles's version. All the characters were being portrayed really well. All the actors did a really great job including the director himself, as well. Overall,I thought this film was really intense.
ReplyDeleteThis film was another one that was really hard for me to watch. Even though it didnt have any rape scenes, all the killing was bad enough for me. This film had a different story to it so it was nice to see a film where the main character is the one who has convicted all these crimes and becomes the enemy of the world. This was a quite different and interesting one for me.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Polanski's version much more than Wells's. It was a little more exciting and I was able to become more attached to the characters. It was also much more brutal. However, I did not enjoy it more for that reason. Polanski did a good job and it was an interesting adaptation to "Macbeth."
ReplyDeleteThis was definitely my favorite tragedy by Shakespeare.
ReplyDeleteI though that this film was kind of crazy however I did enjoy it. This film did have a more dark appeal to it then then other films that we have watched. I though that the director did a good job at deciding to make the film more graphic.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was an interesting choice to make Macbeth and Lady Macbeth younger in Polanski's version.
ReplyDeleteI loved this play but was not to into this movie I found it somewhat boring to be honest. I loved the scenery used, the setting being exactly what I pictured. I actually preferred Welles' movie over this one. There was something about the screeching sounds, the black and white filming, and cheap props that drew me in over this movie in comparison.
ReplyDeleteEven though this film had a little bit more of a dark side to it, I still enjoyed as much as Welles's version of Macbeth. I thought that the casting was perfect and I loved each scenery.
ReplyDeleteMacbeth is defInitelu my favorite Shakespeare movie. The 2010 version was better than both the versions we saw in class all in all this was a great movie
ReplyDeleteRoman Polanski's version of Macbeth was very powerful and stayed true to the original Shakespeare play. This version of Macbeth had a more dark feel to it and the scnenery created an interesting settin for the movie that was a lot like i would havge imagined Macbeth myself
ReplyDeleteThis was one of my least favorite movies we've watched, particularly due to the fact that it was so gruesome and negative.
ReplyDeleteThis was just another typical Shakespeare tragedy. I did not enjoy this film at all but I stilll repspect what the director was trying to display to his audience. I just did not really get it and was not enthusiastic about watching the movie. Not a terrible film but certainly nothing I would watch at home.
ReplyDeleteThis film was very long and seemed to have unnecessary scenes in it that forced it to drag out, however I still thoroughly enjoyed the film. My only real complaint was the battle scene at the end with Macbeth seemed more like they were play fighting rather than a man enraged trying to avenge his family's death as it was intended. I thought this took away from the film's intensity.
ReplyDeleteI like Macbeth and I like the themes this movies goes on about. The idea that power and wealth will consume you as it does Macbeth. I think it is something important for people to think about and to not change as a person. Obviously Macbeth could've used this advice.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion Macbeth is a very deep and meaningful play, when you look at all the underlying factors that he faces. I thought that the movie did a very good job when picking the people to play each charter. They interacted well together making the film more believable. I have read the play before in high school but until watching the film and rereading specific passages did I really get the whole picture of the play. I really enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteThis version of Macbeth is one of the more disturbing ones to me. I feel like it's extremely dark and gory. I understand that this play is very dark and bloody but not to the extent that it was in this film. I felt like it might have been overkill just a little bit.
ReplyDeleteI definitely felt like there were some unnecessary scenes in this version of Macbeth. The play was accurate to Shakespeare, but was dragged on entirely too long for my liking.
ReplyDeleteI agree with JBeltran in that there were a few unecessarily long or dragged out scenes that made the movie a bit tedious.
ReplyDeleteThis was not my favorite Shakespeare film that we watched in class but I did enjoy the violent controversy this version of macbeth had to offer. The style of the film wasnt for me, but if you like watching a character struggle with there own insanity like inception then i would recommend this film.
ReplyDeleteI liked how Roman Polanski opted to change the traditional conveyance of Shakespeare's soliloquies. I thought it was a cool idea to do Macbeth's part as a voice over.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with some of the above comments.
ReplyDeletenice use of gore and filming techniques. he captures the darker side of macbeth
ReplyDeleteThis was a bit more difficult for me to enjoy.
ReplyDelete
